Yankees Opening Day: Josh Donaldson's walk-off hit

The Yankees and Red Sox played a chaotic affair (as seemingly always), and this one stretch on to the 11th. The hero turned out to be former MVP and Yankee newcomer Josh Donaldson! His single gave the Yankees their first Opening Day walk-off since 1957. Now how about, say, 120 more wins like that? Am I unreasonable? Who is to say?

Gio Urshela falls into Rays dugout making incredible catch

What a freakin' play by Gio Urshela! The Yanks haven't scored yet and need every single out they can get from Rays hitters, and Gio knew it. He limped off the field and who knows where he goes from here (though he stayed in the game), but talk about a perhaps-season-saving play. Nothing else to say but wow.

Subway Series benches empty as Yankees, Mets chirp

After Francisco Lindor hit a homer to put the Mets up, 6-4, he whistled at Yankees as he rounded the bases. An inning later, Giancarlo Stanton tied the score with a two-run shot and chirped right back at him, leading to the benches emptying. No punches were thrown, but hey, elusive Subway Series spiciness! (Alas, Lindor got the last laugh by homering a third time to put the Mets back in front.)

The Somerset Patriots' ballpark is underwater

You thought Yankee Stadium looked rough last night? Well, holy moly is this bad. The Somerset Patriots are away from Bridgewater this week, but it might take some time to get the ballpark operating again after a mess like this, which was part of the storms that ravaged the tri-state area on September 1st. Hope everyone's staying safe.

Aaron Judge demolished a homer into the Field of Dreams corn

It's really too bad that there is no Statcast for this game because holy smokes did Judge that ball hit a long, long way off Cy Young contender Lance Lynn. We'll just have to settle on a distance of "YOWZA ft." That put the Yankees up, 3-1.

Update: MLB put out a great side camera view of the Judge homer as well. Worth a look!

Yankees turn third triple play of 2021 to end Sunday's win

It seemed like Aroldis Chapman was about to fall apart with two men on and Sean Murphy at the plate in a one-run game. Then, they turned to the team's new secret weapon: the triple play! A sharp grounder to Gio Urshela was quickly converted into the team's third triple-killing of 2021 and that was how the ballgame ended. Unbelievable!

MLB Network releases new Lou Gehrig short: "Heart of a Hero"

Nancy Frates (mother of the late ALS advocate Pete Frates) narrates this moving new feature released in time for the inaugural Lou Gehrig Day. The "Iron Horse" was an absolutely unbelievable baseball players and by all accounts, an even better person. It's a tragedy that the game lost him on this day 80 years ago, so young at age 37. Gehrig's memory lives on, as does the fight against ALS.

Yankees turn triple play to escape huge ninth-inning jam

It's improbable enough when runners actually get on against Aroldis Chapman, but turning a triple play in the same inning? Holy hell, that's an escape. It's the Yankees' first triple play since April 17, 2014, which was turned by Yangervis Solarte, Brian Roberts, and Scott Sizemore of all people. Just a few minutes later, the Yankees walked off a 2-1 win on Gleyber Torres single.

Corey Kluber is just one inning away from a no-hitter!

Through eight brilliant innings and just 93 pitches, Kluber has struck out nine batters and walked just one. It's the longest no-hit effort by a Yankees starter since Mike Mussina in 2001. Let's see if he finishes it off!

Yankees fans give Jose Altuve a deserved Bronx cheer

You think Yankees fans remember the sign-stealing scandal or what? During Aaron Judge's at-bat in the bottom of the first, they also let Altuve know how they felt about the 2017 AL MVP voting in, shall we say, less-than-polite fashion. But hey, this is the punishment they got to avoid in 2020. Bring it on, Yankees fans!

Gerrit Cole named AL Pitcher of the Month

In April, Cole pitched to a 1.43 ERA, a 0.717 WHIP, and a ridiculous 0.48 FIP across six starts. He struck out 62 batters and walked just three. The man was on fire and he has been justly rewarded with the fifth Pitcher of the Month honor of his career. Congrats to Gerrit! (And to Corey Kluber, who nabbed AL Player of the Week honors.)

Aaron Judge crushes grand slam to give Yankees 8-0 lead

After launching a Tarik Skubal pitch 436 feet over Monument Park in the third, Aaron Judge squared up a pitch from Buck Farmer and blasted it out for a grand slam, his seventh homer of 2021. (The whole thing sent one fan into a trance, too.) The big man is heating up!

Giancarlo Stanton annihilated a 471-foot grand slam

It really is absurd how much Giancarlo Stanton can kill a baseball when it's left up in the zone. Shawn Armstrong gave him a cookie, and that poor ball was crushed 115 mph off the bat, sailing 471 feet, the longest homer across MLB in this young season. That slam put the Yankees ahead of Baltimore, 6-0.

Yankees will only bring Brett Gardner back at their price

As Jake noted yesterday, Gardner is probably due a contract higher than $3 million, so it feels like the two sides are at an impasse. We may truly be at the end of Gardner in pinstripes. Will it be worth saving a couple million if Judge or Hicks gets hurt and Tauchman becomes a regular again? We'll see.
