Two days into the Winter Meetings and Brian Cashman is still looking to add pitching. Given the current price on the open market, he has stated he would prefer to make a trade, however, he thinks that signing a pitcher will be easier.
One potential candidate is already in the organization, Michael Pineda. Brian Cashman says that he will compete for the fifth spot in the rotation this spring. Finally healthy, Pineda, along with the likes of Brett Marshall, David Phelps, and Adam Warren will likely have a chance at joining the major league rotation. Manny Banuelos should be back, however, he will likely be given time to return from Tommy John surgery. If this is the plan then the Yankees only need one more pitcher this offseason, and the front office is probably hoping it's Masahiro Tanaka.
The Yankees are also still looking for a reliever, since Joe Girardi believes that David Robertson, Shawn Kelley, and Preston Claiborne (?) are the only "sure things" in the bullpen. Warren will likely return to his role as the longman, while Marshall, Dellin Betances, Chase Whitley, Vidal Nuno, David Huff, and Cesar Cabral will all compete for middle relief roles.
As New York hopes to line up their bullpen going forward, one ex-member is trying to move on. Joba Chamberlain was recently offered a one-year, $3 million contract from the Arizona Diamondbacks, but is still weighing the offer as he looks for the right fit rather than the most money. After the season he had, it seems like that's the best offer he's going to get. The Indians, Tigers, Rockies, Cubs, and Astros are also interested, though it has also been reported that Arizona has in fact NOT offered him a contract.
