Yankees Rumors: Carlos Beltran is the new top target

Elsa

Fresh off of signing Brian McCann to a five-year, $85 million contract with a sixth-year vesting option, the Yankees have now set their sights on Carlos Beltran. The outfielder is believed to be one of many free agents they are looking into, but they prefer him to Jacoby Ellsbury and Shin-Soo Choo. There is mutual interest between the two sides, as Beltran has long wanted to play for the Yankees.

The only hold up appears to be the fact that Beltran is looking for a three-year deal and the Yankees prefer to sign him to a two-year deal instead. There are several other teams interested, including the Red Sox, Rangers, Mariners, and Royals, and some of them could be willing to push their contract to three, so the Yankees might not have a choice if they want to keep the 36-year-old.

While the Yankees could easily use a new outfielder, signing someone through their age-40 season is not the right way to fill that need. If the Yankees sign Beltran they will also forfeit their second round pick , since they have already sacrificed their first. There are other outfielders on the market who will cost much less in dollars, draft picks, and risk.
