Keith Law released his Top 10 prospect lists for every MLB organization on Tuesday, and outfielder Aaron Judge grabbed the top spot for the Yankees. This ranking won't come as a surprise to anyone who checked out Law's Top 100 prospects list last week where four Yankees made the cut. The top four stay in the same order for this list.
Jorge Mateo, Gary Sanchez, James Kaprielian, and Ian Clarkin round out Law's top five. It shows continued faith in Clarkin's ability despite the rough go of it he has had as a professional while battling injuries. The Yankees are in desperate need of quality pitching prospects, so two in the top five is at least somewhat reassuring.
Law ranks Dustin Fowler just outside the top five, just ahead of the youngest name on the list, Wilkerman Garcia. Garcia is getting a lot of love for being the best of the international spending spree signees so far at such a young age. Law ranked Drew Finley eighth on the list, another promising young pitcher who was just drafted last season.
Rounding out the top 10 is Kyle Holder and Tyler Wade. Holder is supposed to be a magician defensively, but his bat was wholly unimpressive in his first half-season after the draft. Wade has progressed through the system consistently, but he doesn't have the great upside at shortstop that Mateo does.
Like most evaluators, Law views the Yankees' system as on the rise. It wasn't that long ago that there was barely anything to talk about in terms of the farm system, and that is certainly not the case today. Seeing some of the better drafts of recent years pay off is exciting.
A couple notable names missing from Law's list include Rob Refsnyder, Domingo Acevedo, and Jacob Lindgren. Law ranked Refsnyder 18th and Lindgren 13th. Acevedo missed the cut due to his command and "reliever's delivery," according to Law.
