MLB All-Star Futures Game: Luis Severino impresses, Peter O`Brien does not

US 3, World 2

Hannah Foslien

As part of the All-Star Game festivities, MLB has the best prospects in baseball face off in an All-Star Game of their own known as the Futures Game. This year, the Yankees had two players in the game, right-handed pitcher Luis Severino and right-handed bat Peter O`Brien. They join the long list of Yankees prospects to play in the game since the first one in 1999:

Alfonso Soriano (1999)
Nick Johnson (1999, 2001)
Juan Rivera (2001)
Chien-Ming Wang (2003)
Robinson Cano (2003, 2004)
Melky Cabrera (2005)
Phil Hughes (2006)
Jose Tabata (2006)
Joba Chamberlain (2007)
Ramiro Pena (2008)
Jesus Montero (2008, 2009)
Manny Banuelos (2009)
Hector Noesi (2010)
Austin Romine (2010, 2011)
Tyler Austin (2012)

Neither Severino or O`Brien started the game, but both came in later on to show off what they have to offer. Severino got into the game for the World Team in the fourth inning, working quickly on the mound and throwing a fastball in the mid-90s with a breaking ball in the low-to-mid-80s. He froze Texas Rangers prospect Joey Gallo with a slider for a strikeout on four pitches, but surrendered a double to Seattle Mariners prospect D.J. Peterson. He then got Winker to fly out to left and Renfroe to pop out to first base for an 11-pitch inning.

Peter O`Brien, on the other hand, was not as impressive. He came into the game to play first base during the sixth inning and might not have even touched the ball. He got a chance to hit in the bottom of the sixth but ended up chasing a few pitches and struck out swinging. He came back up in the eighth and struck out again on three pitches. He didn't look too great. O`Brien did take two throws in from short and second in the eighth inning and the universe didn't implode, so there's something.

The US team took a 1–0 lead in the bottom of the third inning against Edwin Escobar of the San Francisco GiantsJesse Winker of the Cincinnati Reds doubled left field, Hunter Renfroe of the San Diego Padres singled and Kevin Plawecki of the New York Mets hit a ground ball to drive in a run.

In the sixth inning Lucas Giolito of the Washington Nationals came in for the US Team and surrendered a single to Dalton Pompey of the Toronto Blue Jays. Javier Baez of the Chicago Cubs came to the plate and nocked a two-run homer to center to give Team World the lead. However, Michael Feliz of the Houston Astros gave the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning. He allowed a single from J.P Crawford Philadelphia Phillies and gave up a two-run bomb to Joey Gallo that put the US back on top 3–2. The score stood there for the rest of the game with the US coming out on top in the end.
