With the Arizona Diamondbacks hiring away bullpen coach Mike Harkey, the Yankees will need to find a replacement. George A. King III put together a potential list for both internal and external candidates.
If they go outside the organization, Gary Tuck could be a leading candidate. He was the bullpen coach for the 1990 team and served as catching instructor from 1998 to 1999 while Joe Girardi was in New York. Tuck served as Girardi's bench coach with the Marlins in 2006 and was the bullpen coach for the Red Sox from 2007 to 2012.
If they stay inside the organization, the Yankees could target Triple-A pitching coach Scott Aldred, who the Diamondbacks interviewed as well. There is also current Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Dave Miley, who managed the Cincinnati Reds from 2003 to mid-2005, and Scranton hitting coach Butch Wynegar.
Other possible internal candidates include Greg Pavlick, a senior pitching instructor and served as a the bullpen coach for the New York Mets in the 1980s and 1990s, Gil Patterson, the Yankees' minor league pitching coordinator, Tom Nieto, who was the Yankees' catching instructor from 2000 to 2001, and Julio Mosquera, who has been the catching coordinator for the last eight years, and is part of the spring training coaching staff.
I would prefer if they stuck with the guys who are familiar with pitching, so I would eliminate Wynegar, Nieto, and Mosquera. Out of Tuck, Aldred, Miley, Pavlick, and Patterson, I would expect one of the first three to be named, probably Tuck, if Girardi has a say, or Aldred, because of his resume. Not that we really know what a bullpen coach does.
