Around the Empire: Yankees news - 3/11/16

Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

New York Post | George King III: The Yankees have decided that Starlin Castro won't be asked to back up Chase Headley at third base. Castro will serve as Didi Gregorius' backup at shortstop, however. That leaves the door open for Rob Refsnyder to make the team as the primary backup at the hot corner.

New York Daily News | Peter Botte: Goose Gossage held nothing back when insulting everything about baseball from Jose Bautista's bat flips to the nerds trying to run the game. The former Yankee's profane tirade just came across as a bitter old man yelling for kids to get off his lawn.

NJ.com | Ryan Hatch: Brian Cashman says service time won't factor into his decision when naming Austin Romine or Gary Sanchez the team's backup catcher. The Yankee GM maintains that he wants to take the best team north, regardless of who that is made up of. Whether anyone should believe him or not is another matter entirely, of course.

ESPN | Andrew Marchand: Aroldis Chapman made his Yankee debut without much fanfare on Thursday. The team's presumed closer struggled and only managed to record two outs in his first outing of spring training, but the left-hander said he felt fine physically.

New York Post | Ken Davidoff: Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran have more than 600 stolen bases between them. The days of them lighting up the base paths are behind them, but they are trying to lend some of their knowledge to Brett Gardner. The Yankee left fielder doesn't lack for speed, but his instincts aren't always great. Hopefully he learns from two great sources of base stealing knowledge.
