Today CC Sabathia will get the start for the Yankees in their second game of the series against the Rangers. Going into this season, no one knew what to expect from Sabathia after he missed most of last season rehabbing a knee injury. So far, he's been all over the place. As he's been known to do the past few years, Sabathia has given up his fair share of home runs (1.38 HR/9), but he's been able to generate strikeouts despite his decreased velocity (7.44 K/9). Sabathia hasn't faced the Rangers since back in 2012, when he pitched eight innings, struck out eight batters and held them to four runs, which was good enough to earn him the win. Wins and losses aren't really a meaningful stat since the offense, defense and bullpen all impact the outcome of the game, but Sabathia has been the victim of some hard-luck losses in a few of his outings. Still, he could earn his third win in a row today if things go well. More importantly, the Yankees are looking to halt their four-game losing streak.
Nick Martinez will take the mound for the Rangers. The young right-hander has been pretty good this season, sporting a 1.88 ERA through eight starts, though his other stats aren't quite so shiny as he also has a 3.67 FIP and 4.93 xFIP. Martinez doesn't typically get a lot of strikeouts, but in his most recent outing, he held the Indians to one run, struck out six batters and walked five. Most of the Yankees either haven't faced Martinez, or have only seen him a handful of times, but Brett Gardner has taken him deep once.
Today's game starts at 1:05 EST and it will be available on WPIX and MLB Network.
