Yankees vs Red Sox Game Preview: Nathan Eovaldi debuts

Nathan Eovaldi and Wade Miley debut for their respective clubs in an early-season rivalry showdown.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

After starting the season with a shaky opening series, the Yankees are hoping that newcomer Nathan Eovaldi can help change their luck and get them going in the right direction. Eovaldi was the main return for the Yanks in this winter's Martin Prado trade with the Marlins, and since then the 25-year-old right hander has only generated more and more buzz among Yankee fans ever since. Tonight, we can expect to see his newly developed splitter, which he worked on with pitching coach Larry Rothschild to go along with his slider, curve, and mid-to-high 90's fastball. One of the keys will be to avoid giving up that big inning, which hurt the Yankees in each of their losses. This is Eovaldi's first career start against Boston.

The Red Sox are coming off a solid series against the Phillies in which they took two of three. They will be sending a new acquisition of their own to the mound in lefty Wade Miley. After strong rookie and sophomore seasons, Miley had a down year in 2014, but the Sox clearly feel good about him being able to bounce back considering the three-year contract extension he received in February. The Yanks have limited experience against Miley. Chase Headley has by far seen him the most, and is 3-for-17 against him.

Alex Rodriguez, after teeing off for his first home run of the season last night against Daniel Norris, will stay in the front-third of the lineup against another lefty, this time hitting third. Carlos Beltran and Didi Gregorius aren't in the lineup tonight, giving Chris Young and Gregorio Petit each a second consecutive start as the Yankees look to delay their first losing streak of the season. First pitch is at 7:05, and it will be the first game back on WPIX.
