The Yankees and the Blue Jays are both going to the bullpen to finish their series. Openers Chad Green and Wilmer font will begin the game for their respective clubs, and a host of relievers are set to follow them.
It’s safe to say that Green has returned to form after the disastrous beginning to his 2019 season. Green has been able to move from opener to middle relief without issue, and has allowed only one run in his last 13.2 innings pitched. He’ll be the baton leader for a couple of Yankee pitchers making their season debuts, Jordan Montgomery and Dellin Betances.
Montgomery is likely to immediately follow Green and could work his way into postseason discussions if he’s especially sharp, but Betances figures to be the man to watch. Betances has been one of the foundational pieces for this Yankee bullpen for several years, and getting him back into the fold before October could be crucial.
Font has bounced around a bit this season. He began the year with Tampa Bay and was initially used there as a late-inning reliever, but couldn’t cut it. He found his way over to the Mets and immediately transferred to opener duty, not finding much success. Font went back into the middle innings and got back into form before a trade to Toronto, where he has been almost exclusively an opener. He’s been excellent of late, allowing just five runs in his last 23 innings.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:07 p.m. EST. You can catch the action live on YES, or stream it on mlb.tv or fubo.tv. You can also listen to the broadcast on WFAN 660/101.9 FM or WADO 1280.
Last one of the road trip. Let’s make it a ‘W’.
