The Yankees took Georgia high school catcher Anthony Seigler with the 23rd overall pick this year. They then went with another catcher in the second round Josh Breaux from McClennan Community College in Texas. Taking two catchers is certainly a bold decision, but was it a good idea?
Breaux is considered the top prospect to come out of junior college this year and has a right-handed bat with a lot of raw power. He has also improved behind the plate and his experience as a pitcher gives him a great arm behind the plate.
It’s clear the Yankees are looking to infuse the system with some catching depth this year. Outside of Gary Sanchez, Austin Romine, and Kyle Higashioka, there isn’t much hanging around in the minors. Maybe they see him as an older guy who could move up quickly and offer more with the bat than past backup catchers have offered. What do you think?
