The Yankees like right-handed pitchers

The Yankees went to the pitching well once again and pulled out right-handed reliever Austin Gardner with their ninth-round pick. Gardner has been on the move a lot over the course of his college career, traveling from Wichita State as a freshman, to Cisco College as a sophomore, before spending his last two seasons with University of Texas Arlington.

After an incredibly bad 2016, where he was consistently swatted around, he compiled an ERA north of 9.00 in 12 games. He turned things around this year to become the Mavericks’ go-to bullpen arm. Gardner hasn’t made many headlines or received much consideration from prospect evaluators, but the Yankees clearly see something they like. Let’s hope it’s really there.

Here is Pinstripe Alley’s write-up on Gardner.

Let us know what you think of the Yankees’ ninth round pick. Do you think he will prove his worth, or will we forget who Gardner is by year’s end? Vote below!
