No Gerrit Cole redux! Woo!

Some exciting news emerged from the Hey Man this morning regarding the Yankees and the 33rd overall pick in the draft, lefty prep prospect Ian Clarkin:

The Yankees have reached a deal with another of their trio of first-round picks, lefty prep pitcher Ian Clarkin, who -- like Eric Jagielo -- agreed to slot money.
Clarkin created something of a ruckus by declaring his dislike for baseball's most storied franchise -- right before he was picked by them. But he did it in a fun way, and later made clear he was joking. His fairly quick signing, for the $1,650,100 slot amount would indicate as much. He is on his way to Tampa on Monday for a physical.

After getting spurned by Gerrit Cole in the first round of the '08 draft, many people (including me) worried that Clarkin might pull a Cole and turn down the Yankees' offer, opting to go to college at the University of San Diego. Thankfully, that was not the case this year, and one of the top pitching prospects from last year's draft now belongs to the Yankees (for slot money, too). My guess is that he will report to Rookie Ball sometime soon like Ty Hensley did last year. Someone bubble wrap him just in case.

The quick summary of Clarkin is that he has a tremendous curveball and that he is so highly regarded that ESPN's Keith Law considered him the second-best high school lefty in the draft. I highly recommend checking out Tanya's writeup of Clarkin for more information.

For those wondering, the last unsigned first-rounder, Aaron Judge, still hasn't issued a ruling on the Yankees' slot offer yet, but people seem optimistic that he will sign rather than going back to Fresno State.

UPDATE:

It's great news that it did not take long for the Yankees to sign Jagielo, who seems to be considered their best top pick since Slade Heathcott in '09 (if not better). Callis also addressed some comparisons that fans have made to the Yankees' 2003 first-round third baseman bust, Eric Duncan, noting that Jagielo has "more pop" and proved himself against better comparisons. I'll also chime in that there's a fairly obvious difference between high school third basemen and collegiate third baseman. Notre Dame likely made Jagielo more polished than Seton Hall Prep did for Duncan.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Jagielo was ranked 16th in the Top 500 Draft Prospects by Baseball America, 26th by ESPN's Keith Law, and 37th by MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo. Check out Tanya's writeup on Jagielo for more. Since fellow college draftee Derek Toadvine is headed for Short-Season-A Staten Island, it would make sense for Jagielo to report there as well, though nothing has been announced just yet.

UPDATE: Jagielo will indeed report to Staten Island, but he tweaked his hamstring, so it will be a few weeks before he joins the team. He's a Yankee already.

Baseball America has a summary of what every team in the American League did on draft day. They also noted that after taking several prep bats in the first few rounds, they stuck with college players for the middle rounds and didn't take another high school player until after the 10th round.

Beyond the Box Score has a study about the success rate of prospects that were called up before they were 21 and tries to figure out why these players failed. Some of the best prospects ever have been called up while they were young, but there have also been many terrible debut seasons over the years. Whatever the reason might be, it certainly has nothing to do with a loss in confidence.

Keith Law (subscription required) likes the Yankees' first round picks, believing that Eric Jagielo's power is present, but Aaron Judge needs time to develop in-game. Ian Clarkin had trouble with command this season, but his velocity was strong. If he had performed better he would have been taken earlier in the draft. However, he believes that Gosuke Katoh and Tyler Wade are better off going to college than going pro and Mike O'Neill has no plate discipline. He also thinks David Palladino will end up in the bullpen and Nick Rumbelow's high arm slot could make him an injury concern.

The Yankees drafted a total of 18 players off Baseball America's top 500 list (second highest).
In the 26th round the Yankees picked Cal Quantrill, the son of former Yankee Paul Quantrill, with the 794th pick of the draft. The right-handed pitcher has an advanced understanding of the game as the son of a big leaguer and relies on a sinker ball in the upper-80s. He also throws a changeup, curveball and slider, with his change having the potential to be a plus offering. Right now Quantrill is 6' 2 and 176 pounds, but he's expected to add velocity as he grows. He was taken out of Trinity College School in Canada and is committed to Stanford.

The Yankees drafted RHP Dillon McNamara, a senior from Adelphi University in New York in the 27th round, making him 824th overall. The 6' 5", 220 pound stater throws a fastball, slider, and cutter. He was the ace of the staff when he was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrom, the same condition Chris Carpenter is currently dealing with, and had surgery last year to repair the damage. He was placed in the bullpen so he could start back slow, but he ended up thriving in the role, topping off at 95 mph and setting the Adelphi single season saves record (10). Although he's been in the bullpen, he could still be a starter.

In the 28th round the Yankees finally took a catcher in Fresno State's Trent Garrison, the 854th overall pick in the draft. The fifth year senior and teammate of fellow Yankee draftee, Aaron Judge, bats left-handed and hit .280/.330/.347 in 193 at-bats for the 2013 season. He was named 2012 second-team All-Western Athletic Conference, 2012 All-Tournament Team, and 2012 Academic All-WAC team, 2013 Mountain West First-Team honorees. Garison was drafted by the Angels in the 50th round of the 2011 draft, the last year the draft went that long, and ended up playing in one game before suffering a season ending injury. He is the brother of Taylor Garrison, who the Yankees took in the seventh round of the 2012 draft.

The Yankees drafted OF Charles White, a junior from the University of Maryland, College Park, in the 29th round to become the 884th overall selection. The 5' 9" 175 pound left-handed batter hit .350/.449/.411 in 214 at-bats this season. As a high schooler he was named to the Rawlings All-American and All-Region Central Region Team in 2010 and appeared on Perfect Game's top 1000 prospects list.

In the 30th round the Yankees selected OF Cody Thomas 914th overall. The left-handed hitter from Cody Heritage High School in Texas profiles to be a physical outfielder and could become a solid baseball player. Thomas is committed the University of Oklahoma where he will play baseball and football. As a quarterback, the Sooners expect him to play football, but if he decides on baseball, the 6' 5, 215 pounder offers a lot of power potential. His swing is long and needs work, but he's athletic enough to make the necessary adjustments. He was on the 2013 Rawlings All-American and All-Region Texas - All Region 1st Team.

The Yankees drafted SS Kevin Cornelius out of Grayson County College in Texas in the 31st round as the 944th overall pick. The 6'1" 178 pound right-handed hitter was previously drafted by the Yankees in the 42nd round of the 2011 draft before he opted to go to TCU. He hit .398/.441/.718 in 181 at-bats, leading the team in home runs (12) and RBI (56) for Grayson this season. He was described as having an overly aggressive swing with an uppercut.

Chauncey 'Kale' Sumner was drafted by the Yankees as a senior from Hawaii Pacific University. He was chosen in the 32nd round of the draft and was picked 974th overall. Sumner was drafted as a third baseman, but he has played all around the infield and scouts say that his best chance to make it is as a catcher. The right-handed hitter earned PacWest First Team All-League in 2012 and PacWest Freshman of the Year honors in 2010.

The Yankees selected RHP Shane McCarley from Manvel High School in Texas as the 1004th overall pick in the 33rd round. The 6'1", 205 pounder is a highly regarded quarterback in the Southern Houston area and played outfield for Manvel, as well as pitched.

The Yankees selected 2B Hector Crespo, a senior at Appalachian State University, in the 34th round at 1034th overall. The 5' 10" 175 pound right-handed hitter is the teammate of 24th round Yankee draftee Sam Agnew-Wieland. In his senior year he earned Southern Conference's First Team All-League Team, hit .336, stole 21 bases to become the ASU all-time leader (100).

The Yankees took RHP Nick Green with their 35th round pick to make him 1064th overall. The 6' 1" 165 pound righty comes from Fountain-Ft Carson High School in Colorado. He is also an outfielder and he was named to the Rawlings All-American and All-Region West Region Team in 2013.

The Yankees selected LHP Tyler Stubblefield from Lufkin High School in Texas as the 1093rd overall pick in the 36th round. The 6' 5" 215 pounder sits around 86-88 mph, but hits as high as 91 mph and he throws a slider and a changeup as well. He plays football as well and is committed to Texas A&M. As a junior in high school he was ranked 475th in the nation and the #6 lefty in the state of Texas by Perfect Game.

The Yankees took Josh Pettitte, the son of Andy Pettitte with their 37th round pick to make him 1124th overall. The right-hander, out of Deer Park High School in Texas, has a strong commitment to Baylor and will likely pass on the Yankees' offer. He has modeled himself on his father and has a good easy delivery, but hits only as high as 88 mph. He has great control and good secondary pitches (changeup, curveball, slider). His father said the plan is still for him to go to college, which he needs to do in order to refine his abilities and iron out his weaknesses. Despite throwing two no-hitters this season, he needs to up his velocity or he's not going to make it.

The Yankees took SS Ty Afenir with their 39th round pick to make him the 1184 overall pick.
The Yankees took outfielder Kendall Coleman 344th overall in the 11th round out of Rockwall High School in Texas. Baseball America listed him as one of their sleeper picks, commenting that his below average speed and arm strength will limit him to a corner outfield spot, so he will have to hit. His swing is on the long side and looks uphill at times, but he makes loud contact with the ball. The 6' 4, 200 pound high schooler attended the Perfect Game WWBA in Jupiter, FL and 17U WWBA in East Cobb in 2011 and 2012 and was named to the 2012 All-Tournament Team both times. The left-handed hitter is committed to Iowa University.

In the 12th round the Yankees took RHP Philip Walby, a junior out of San Diego State at 374th overall. At 6' 3 and 215 pounds, Walby is a strong and durable power pitcher who placed 282nd on Baseball America's top 500 list. He has a deceptive delivery and arm slot to make his 89-93 mph fastball seem even faster. He also has an offspeed pitch that is somewhere between a curveball and a slide with an infrequent changeup. He will need to develop his secondary pitches if he wants to make it in pro ball.

In the 13th round the Yankees took RHP Cale Coshow, a junior out of Oklahoma Christian University at 404th overall. He transfered from the University of Oklahoma in order to get more playing time and became the staff ace. He has a plus fastball that reaches up to 95 mph, and a potentially average or better curveball and changeup. He lacks command and, at 6' 5 and 260 pounds, he has weight problems. He was a top recruit out of high school and, as Baseball America's #431 prospect, he still has lots of upside.

The Yankees drafted LHP Caleb Smith 434th overall in the 14th round, a junior from Sam Houston State. Smith started the year as the staff ace, but struggled and was moved to the back of the rotation before he rebounded. He throws a fastball in the low-90s and mixes it well with a solid changeup, but lacks command and a feel for his slider, leading him to overuse his change. The 6' 3 200 pound lefty has a stiff delivery and might be better suited for the bullpen. He ranked at 263 on BA's top 500 prospect list.

The Yankees took Jordan Barnes at 464th overall in the 15th round. He is an outfielder from Northwest Mississippi Community College and at 5' 10, 185 pounds, the right-handed hitter is on the small size. Barnes worked out for the Yankees and Marlins and played in the postseason with his team. In 2012 he was on the Rawlings All-American and All-Regions Team for the Southeast Region.

The Yankees selected RHP Ryan Butler in the 16th round as the 494th overall pick in the draft. The 6' 5, 230 pound righty originally attended Marshall before he transferred to Central Piedmont Community College. His father was drafted by the California Angels in the 1991 MLB draft and played five seasons in the organization. Butler was on the 2010 Rawlings All-American and All-Region Atlantic Region Team.

The Yankees drafted RHP Hever Bueno out of Westwood High School in Arizona in the 17th round to make him the 524th overall pick. He was elected to the Mesa All-City baseball team as the Pitcher of the Year for 2013, which is decided on by the schools' coaches. He was on the 2013 Rawlings All-American and All-Region West Region Team and was an honorable mention for the 2012 Perfect Game Underclass All-American and All-Region Team.

Dustin Fowler, a left-handed hitting outfielder from West Laurens High School in Georgia, was taken by the Yankees in the 18th round as the 554th pick of the draft. The 6', 185 pounder was once a wrestler and football player before focusing on baseball and from there he honed his talents and improved his game, winning him the Telegraph's All-Middle Georgia GHSA Baseball Player of the Year award. He has quick hands and an effortless swing with some power to go along with his speed. Amazingly, he struck out only 27 times in 254 at-bats through three seasons and only three times in 82 at-bats in his senior year.

The Yankees took RHP Andrew Beresford as a fifth year senior from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in the 19th round to make him the 584th overall pick. The 6' 6, 200 pound righty had season ending surgery in 2010, but has since recovered and was touching 95 mph back in March. He had a tough year in 2013 with a 4.00 ERA and 11 H/9 in 27 innings, but he did have a K/9 of 7.67 with four saves and didn't give up a home run all season in his first full year out of the bullpen.

The Yankees selected 3B Drew Bridges out of Carthage High School in Missouri in the 20th round and 614 overall. He is a left-handed hitting third baseman/first baseman who has very good hitting and power tools. He has a good feel for hitting and consistently makes contact and his bat speed and pure strength should allow him to have above-average power. The 6' 4, 230 pounder has below-average range to both sides and will need some work in pro ball, so his bat is what is going to carry him. He is ranked #449 on Baseball America's list of top 500 prospects.

In the 21st round the Yankees made LHP Ethan Carnes the 644th overall pick. The 6' 4, 205 pound junior was selected out of the University of Oklahoma and previously played for Texarkana College and Howard College, where he helped the latter to a conference championship in 2012. In his one year at Oklahoma he had a 4.46 ERA, 10.22 H/9 with a 6.82 K/9 and a sparkling 1.57 BB/9 in 34.1 innings in 2013. As a high schooler he ranked in Perfect Game's top 1000 prospects in 2010.

Yankees 26-40 round selections - Josh Pettitte

A rundown on the Yankees' 26-40 round selections

The Yankees selected 2B Derek Toadvine with their 22nd round pick to make him 674th overall. The 5' 10, 175 pound junior out of Kent State hit .284/.369/.329 in 2013 with 23 stolen bases, the most on his team. His 58 runs score and 23 SB were good for second place in the Mid-American Conference. In 2011 he was on the All-NCAA Championship Austin Regional Team and in 2010 he was on the Rawlings All-American and All-Region Central Region Team.

The Yankees selected RHP Alex Polanco out of Western Oklahoma State in the 23rd round as the 704th overall pick. The 6' 4, 230 pound righty is a local kid, coming out of Pennsauken, NJ where he led South Jersey in home runs before turning to pitching. Polanco only pitched in 11.1, making three starts and two relief appearances where he had a 1.59 ERA, striking out 18 batters while walking a total of 10.

The Yankees drafted RHP Sam Agnew-Wieland in the 24th round to make him the 734th overall pick in the draft. He was taken as a junior out of Appalachian State in North Carolina, but also attended Middle George College in 2012 and Georgia State in 2011. The 6' 1, 210 pound righty was Appalachian States' No. 2 starter, compiling a 5.15 ERA, 7.46 K/9 and a 4.52 BB/9 in 85.2 innings, but the statistics are misleading. In his junior year he was throwing 85-87 mph, but after a move to the bullpen he jumped up to 92-93 and touched 95 mph before moving back into the rotation and seeing improvements in his fastball and slider.

The Yankees took LHP Jordan Floyd out of Shawnee Heights in Kansas in the 25th round, 764 overall. He is an imposing figure on the mound at 6' 4 and 245 pounds as an honorable mention all-league offensive lineman. His fastball has seen an uptick in velocity into the upper-80s and will continue to add velocity as he refines his skills. His secondary pitches, a curveball and changeup, both show promise. He is committed to Kansas State.

As his dad was picking up win #250, RHP Josh Pettitte was being drafted by the Yankees in the 37th round, 1124th overall, in the 2013 MLB Draft. It was a move powered more by respect for Andy than dreams of signing Josh Pettitte to a contract right now, as he has already committed to attended Baylor University in the fall. Both Andy and Josh reaffirmed that commitment after the news that he was drafted was announced.

The later rounds of the drafts are full of these type moves, as Kacy Clemens was drafted by the Houston Astros, Torii Hunter Jr. was drafted by the Detroit Tigers, and the Yankees also picked up the son of Paul Quantrill, Cal, in the 26th round.

It's a nice move on the Yankees part. Josh Pettitte pitched two no-hitters for Deer Park High School in Texas this season. Maybe he will find lots of success at Baylor and end up back with the Yankees in three or four years. In the meantime, we'll have to stick to enjoying the end of the great career of the elder Pettitte. Are you listening to this, Derek Jeter? We're waiting on a new shortstop.

Rounds 11-40 of the 2013 MLB Draft will begin today at 1:00 pm EDT streaming live on MLB.com. At this stage of things, the picks move fast and the players become less and less known commodities to people who haven't spent months researching. Those in the top 100 prospects who are left are likely there because teams know they have little to no shot of pulling them away from school. That means teams are looking for value in unsuspecting places, high upside, and signability at this stage.

The Yankees have yet to take a catcher in this year's draft, which makes a little sense when you see the depth that already exists in the organization at that position. Still, I'd be surprised if one wasn't taken by them in one of their first few picks today. First base is also pretty barren throughout the system, but it seems like that position is usually a player who couldn't hack it elsewhere moved to first base, rather than someone drafted specifically for the job.

Questions:

What positions do you think the Yankees need to focus on today?

Are you happy with the players they have drafted so far?

Of the players already drafted by the Yankees, who do you predict will make the majors first?

If the draft at this stage is of no interest to you, feel free to use this as an open thread for the day if you're stuck inside until game time later. The East Coast, at least where I am, is still dealing with additional rain after already dealing with monsoon season caused by Tropical Storm Andrea. I think I've forgotten what the sun looks like. Hopefully it's nicer where you are.
