Robinson Cano's new agent Jay-Z, and Roc Nation, are being investigated by the Major League Baseball Players Association for a possible rules violation. For his birthday, Cano received a $33,900 watch as a gift and according to the rules, that's a big no-no.
Section 5(B)(5)(a): "No Player Agent or Applicant shall provide, cause to be provided or promise to provide, any money or any other thing of value to any player, or any person related to or associated with such player, the purpose of which is to induce or encourage such player to use or continue to use any person's or firm's services as a Player Agent, Representative, or Draft Advisor.''
The rule is in place to prevent agencies from using gifts as a way to retain their players. It's unknown what kind of punishment could come their way if Jay-Z is found in violation. It could be anywhere between fine and suspension, though it could be argued that it's simply a gift between friends.
