Yankees offense ranked dead last at three positions

The Yankee offense ranked dead last at three positions this season. Unsurprisingly, they were last at third base, right field, and designated hitter. No other team ranked last more than once.

The 69 wRC+ at third base was primarily thanks to Jayson Nix. He had 303 plate appearances at the hot corner, easily the highest of any other Yankee. David Adams, Mark Reynolds, Kevin Youkilis, and Alex Rodriguez were the main contributors. Luis Cruz, Chris Nelson, Brent Lillibridge, Alberto Gonzalez all got at-bats at third base at some point. Not even the return of A-Rod could raise the Yankees above last place.

The 70 wRC+ that Yankees right fielders put up is almost entirely thanks to Ichiro Suzuki. Other than him, there was Ben Francisco, Brennan Boesch, and a cameo appearance by Thomas Neal and managed to lower the total wRC+ by one whole point.

The 2013 DH situation was a mess until Alex Rodriguez returned from the disabled list. Travis Hafner, Ben Francisco, and Thomas Neal all hit as the designated hitter and even with A-Rod they combined for an 87 wRC+, one point higher than what Hafner put up by himself.

No team that ranked last at a position made it to the playoffs, so the Yankees, with three, never had a chance.
