I was 13 years old at the time, living in Brooklyn amongst Mets fans (yuck lol). I hated the Red Sox with a passion. I was pitching in the youth leagues and Ron Guidry was my idol. There were so many interesting characters on that team that could be described as dysfunctional at times but worked.
Their historic comeback in the last month in the season to their ultimate takedown of the hated Red Sox was something that could be cheered while the NYC was in tumult with the blizzard, crime, poverty, racial tension, newspaper strike and capped off with the Luftansa heist. The 1978 Yankees gave us something to cheer for in that crazy year.
