An Open Letter to Hal Steinbrenner

Dear Mr. Steinbrenner:

Recent articles suggest that you intend to keep both Cashman and Boone in their leadership positions for next year, and that only "fan outrage" would prevent this outcome.

Let me be among those registering such outrage.

The absence of the Yankees from the WS since 2009 should be a matter of great embarrassment to the organization and its players. This gap, now 13 years, is among the longest absence in decades. Yet, there appears to be no sense of urgency to correct this ongoing debacle.

After watching Boone mis-manage the pitching staff for the entire year, and especially in the playoffs, there should be no question of him returning. His only positive is that he is willing to do whatever Cashman and the analytic guru's tell him to do.

Cashman follows your orders to a "t." Your own statements make "financial responsibility" a primary goal, with winning only a secondary objective. The results show it. You are the leader, and the hired help follows.

Instead of signing one of many available great ss's, you and Cashman gave us IKF, and had to take Josh Donaldson for ransom. The only good thing that happened, was getting rid of Sanchez. Releasing him outright would have been more reasonable.

For one year, please make winning the sole objective. Your team is worth $5 billion; it's worth investing sufficient funds to build a winner. There are more great shortstop's out there this year: Correa, Turner, Bogaerts. You could sign two to play 2B and 3B, and still let the "kids" compete for ss.

Judge, of course, has to be signed. Without him, the Yankees are unwatchable, and no better than a 4th place team. You must know this by now.

"Good enough to make the playoffs," but never good enough to win them is no longer tolerable to Yankee fans. It's time to make an honest effort to win the championship.

I presume that Cashman could actually do this with your solid support to spend what is necessary. Replacing him, however, would probably be better after his long history with accomplishing just short of enough.

It is said that you can't buy a championship. I would remind you that in 2009, we did just that. You signed Sabathia, Burnett and Teixeira that year. Tex was a last-minute addition, after initially saying we didn't have enough money to do it. You spent, and we won.

If you follow Pinstripe Alley at all, you know that the troops are indeed restless, and the support for Cashman and Boone is at an all-time low.

If for nothing else but to show you care, it is time for some radical changes in the organization, and how it conducts its baseball operations.
