Yankees prospects: Week 18 minor league review

Double-A Somerset came through with a big week after facing adversity from the major flooding in New Jersey.

Despite playing games in four different states up and down the East Coast, the four Yankees affiliates all found themselves adjusting their schedules for weather this past week. Three of the four Yankees affiliates remain in first place for their division, and with two series left, they have a strong chance at making the playoffs. Some top prospects, such as Jasson Dominguez, Austin Wells, and Everson Pereira are heating up down the stretch, while Anthony Garcia is making a very strong case to be included on every Yankees related prospect listing moving forward.

Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre RailRiders

Record: 59-46, 2nd Place in the Triple-A (Northeast); 5.0 GB

Past Week: 0-7 vs. Buffalo Bison (TOR)

Upcoming: Home vs. Rochester Red Wings (WSN); 43-61

Despite some strong individual performances, the RailRiders were unable to put together a complete performance for a whole game and are now on a nine-game losing streak. Luis Gil, Matt Krook and Clarke Schmidt all put together good outings this week, but the team found ways to lose across the week, falling out of first place and well back of the new division leader Buffalo in the Triple-A East. Michael King was with the team as he worked his way back from a finger injury, and like Gil, he may be headed back to the majors soon.

Players of Note:

Luis Gil: 1 G, 0.00 ERA, 5 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 9 K

Matt Krook 2 G; 0.87 ERA, 10.1 IP, 4 H, 7 BB, 1 ER, 11 K

Ron Marinaccio: 31 G; 1.92 ERA, 56.1 IP, 26 H, 23 BB, 88 K (Full Season of Double-A and Triple-A Stats)

Clarke Schmidt: 4 G; 3.00 ERA, 15.0 IP, 19 H, 4 BB, 20 K

Double-A Somerset Patriots

Record: 63-44, 1st place in the Double-A (Northeast); 2.0 GA

Past Week: 4-2 vs. Bowie Baysox (BAL)

Upcoming: Away vs. Hartford Yard Goats (COL) [Tues.-Thurs.]; Home vs. Hartford Yard Goats [Fri.-Sun.]; 37-69 record

Patriots players and coaches woke up to news this week that their stadium had flooded, and that many of their vehicles and personal belongings that were stored at the stadium were also lost. Amazingly, that did not seem to affect the play of the team on the field. Instead, they took four of six games from their closest competition for a playoff spot — the Bowie Baysox. Oswald Peraza is already considered one of the Yankees’ top prospects, but the shortstop is turning it on down the stretch. On the pitching side, Randy Vasquez continues to impress following his recent promotion to Double-A. While the field is rehabilitated, the Patriots will play the first three games of their next series in Hartford, CT, as they attempt to clean and repair their stadium.

Players of Note:

Josh Breaux: 14 G; .271/.302/.576, 4 HR, 6 2B

Oswald Peraza: 24 G; .343/.398/.505; 4 HR, 4 2B

Luis Medina: 2 G; 3.60 ERA, 10.0 IP, 6 H, 5 BB, 22 K

Randy Vasquez: 2 G; 2.53, 10.2 IP, 11 H, 3 BB, 13 K

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades

Record: 64-43, 1st place in the High-A East (Northern); 9.0 GA

Past Week: 1-5 vs. Greensboro Grasshoppers (PIT)

Upcoming: Home vs. Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM); 42-63

The frustration of a tough week came out in the final game of the series, as the Renegades dropped 23 runs, including a 14-run inning on the Grasshoppers before heading out of town. Austin Wells had a monster series that he finished with a five-hit night, while Everson Pereira had three home runs on the night and has now hit 15 home runs in just 39 games across three levels this season. Anthony Volpe had a down week overall, but finished with a home run that saw him ejected when he crossed home plate. The Renegades will now finish their regular season with two straight home series.

Players of Note:

Anthony Volpe: 43 G; .286/.380/.583, 24 HR, 12 2B, 8 SB

Freicer Perez: 5 G; 0.00 ERA, 5.2 IP, 1 H, 4 BB, 3 K

Everson Pereira: 17 G; .288/.407/.712, 9 HR, 1 2B, 5 SB

Austin Wells: 5 G, .524/.583/.810, 2 HR

Low-A Tampa Tarpons

Record: 70-36, 1st place in the Low-A Southeast (West Coast); 5.0 GA

Past Week: 3-3 vs. Bradenton Marauders (PIT)

Upcoming: Home vs. Dunedin Blue Jays (TOR); 50-58

After getting a late start to the season with the Florida Complex League team, Anthony Garcia has been putting on a show since getting on the field. Known for having some of the best power in the Yankees system, he already has five home runs in just 10 games at the Low-A level. In fewer than 100 total at-bats this season, he has 13 home runs and is starting to get some attention for his overall strong performance. His offensive flurry has at times overshadowed Jasson Dominguez’s recent strong play and a Pitcher of the Week performance by Blane Abeyta.

Players of Note:

Jasson Dominguez: 15 G; .333/.415/.477, 3 HR, 3 2B

Anthony Garcia: 10 G; .333/.488/.818, 5 HR, 1 2B, 2 SB

Blane Abeyta: 3 G; 0.57 ERA, 15.2 IP, 4 H, 6 BB, 1 ER, 20 K - Low-A Southeast Pitcher of the Week
