The Yankeees barely eked out an extra-innings win last night, but as we’ve been saying all year, winning ugly is still winning. They can lock up a series victory today in the second showdown of this three-game set with the Orioles.

If you look, as I do, at the FanGraphs leaderboards every day, specifically the second-half leaders, you’d see that the best pitchers in baseball have been Gerrit Cole, Corbin Burnes, Walker Buehler, Max Scherzer … guys we all consider among baseball’s elite arms. Right there among them is Jordan Montgomery, who is working on an incredible second half of the season, with a 1.93 ERA.

Chris Ellis will make his fourth appearance for the Orioles tonight, having a solid start to his first real taste of MLB-caliber baseball. He posts moderate strikeout numbers, but the key to beating him looks to be laying off his hard, hard breaking pitches, both of which travel well above the MLB average in velocity.
