After losing a crushing series with the Mets, this week represents a big chance for the Yankees to bounce back into the driver’s seat of the AL Wild Card picture. They took care of business yesterday against the Twins, and now travel to Baltimore for a series against the AL’s worst team — a team the Yankees, somehow, are only 9-7 against this year.
Gerrit Cole gets the ball, himself a bounce-back case after leaving last week’s game against the Blue Jays with hamstring issues. The Cy Young favorite didn’t undergo an MRI or appear to really be affected by the injury, so hopefully his precautionary withdrawal from the game was just that. He’s faced the O’s just once this season, throwing 7 shutout innings with 13 strikeouts way back on April 6th.
Alexander Wells gets the ball for the Orioles, and he’s simply had a terrible rookie campaign. In 22.1 innings between the rotation and bullpen, the lefty sports a 7.15 ERA and a home run rate higher than his K/BB ratio.
