Yankees prospects: Week 16 minor league review

The organization’s fifth no-hitter since early July headlined another strong week in the Yankees minor league system.

Brooklyn Cyclones vs Hudson Valley Renegades Set Number: X163621 TK1

Pitching has been front and center across the Yankees’ minor league system this year. At different points this week the Yankees had individual pitchers on 19, 18, and 15 consecutive shutout inning streaks with two of those still active. Those strong performances were all overshadowed by what happened at the Triple-A level. Sean Boyle, making his first Triple-A start, pitched the organization’s fifth minor league no-hitter since July 10th — and that was followed the next night by the team taking another no-hitter into the eight inning while facing the Worcester Red Sox. The Yankees’ top four affiliates all remain in first or second place and are battling for playoff berths as the minor league season has less than a month remaining.

Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre RailRiders

Record: 55-37, 2nd Place in the Triple-A (Northeast); 0.5 GB

Past Week: 4-3 vs. Worcester Red Sox

Upcoming: Away vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs (PHI); 42-51

The news of the week was another no-hitter for the RailRiders as recently promoted pitcher Sean Boyle tossed a no-hitter in the second game of Thursday night’s doubleheader. Another recently promoted pitcher in JP Sears followed up the next night by tossing six hitless innings to start the game. The no-hitter was eventually broken up in the eighth inning after RailRiders pitchers faced 52 straight Worcester hitters without allowing a hit.

Players of Note:

Sean Boyle: 3 G, 0.59 ERA, 15.1 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 14 K

JP Sears: 3 G, 2.45 ERA, 14.2 IP, 12 H, 3 BB, 14 K

Double-A Somerset Patriots

Record: 56-39, T-1st place in the Double-A (Northeast)

Past Week: 3-3 vs. Altoona Curve (PIT)

Upcoming: Home vs. Akron Rubber Ducks (CLE); 59-36

The Patriots are in the middle of a tight playoff race with Akron, Bowie, and Portland where only the teams with the two best records, regardless of Double-A division, will be in the playoffs. They are currently within two games of Bowie and in a virtual tie with Portland. The Patriots return home to face Akron this week riding their strong pitching staff that was led by Hayden Wesneski, who saw his scoreless inning streak end at 18 on Sunday night but still led the team to victory. They suffered a blow over the last week when they lost centerfielder Brandon Lockridge to the IL but stayed in the race by splitting on the road with a good Altoona team.

Players of Note:

Hayden Wesneski: 4 G; 1.16 ERA, 23.1 IP, 17 H, 6 BB, 26 K

Oswald Peraza: 52 G; .311/.360/.493, 7 HR, 2 3B, 15 2B, 13 SB

After blasting a walk-off home run on Thursday night, Anthony Volpe joined Bobby Witt Jr. as the only two minor leaguers with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases on the season. Randy Vasquez has continued to impress on the mound, allowing only one earned run in 24.2 innings this month while striking out 36 batters. The team will look to finish out the last month of play as they begin their Southern tour with two straight series in the state of North Carolina.

Past Week: 4-2 vs. St. Lucie Mets

Upcoming: Home vs. Clearwater Threshers (PHI); 40-50

The Tarpons rode strong pitching and an offense that picked up steam as the week went on to another series win. Benjamin Cowles, the team’s 10th-round draft pick out of the University of Maryland and reigning Big 10 conference home run leader, started tapping into his power and hit two home runs over the weekend. On the pitching side, Beck Way has been outstanding in August. The Yankees’ 2020 fourth-round pick is breaking out in a big way, throwing 19 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
