I hope you got a good night’s sleep after last night’s five-hour ... uh, classic? The Yankees ended up winning after 11 innings, which means they can polish off yet another series win with a victory tonight down in Kansas City, and they might just be sending their best available pitcher to the mound to do it.
Nestor Cortes Jr. will make his fifth start of the season, sporting a 2.15 ERA and 2.67 xERA and becoming the unlikeliest of number two starters. Every time he takes the ball, I figure this will be the outing that the clock strikes midnight on his Cinderella run, but that hasn’t happened yet. Against a Royals team that doesn’t hit the ball all that well ... maybe Cortes has a few hours left in him.
Lineup-wise ... boy that bottom third is rough. Brett Gardner sits tonight, and we are certainly in a weird place where I’m wondering if that is the right decision. Also, some personal news, I will be eating dinner during the game this time, so hopefully I will be less cranky. Also, hopefully, the Yankees will score before the seventh inning, which will also cause me to be less cranky.
