After a pretty terrible week against the Angels and Mets, the Yankees got this one off to a better start last night. They knocked around former Yankee Justus Sheffield en route to a 12-1 win over the Mariners in the series opener. The second game tonight will present a tougher set of circumstances, however.
An injury to Darren O’Day led to Nick Nelson getting added back onto the 26-man roster and now an emergency root canal for Domingo Germán has led to him getting the start tonight. There’s no way to sugarcoat what has been a bad season for Nelson so far, and that includes another game where he got a spot start back in April against the Rays.
On the other side will be Yusei Kikuchi, who is having a very nice season and was recently named to his first ever All-Star Game. He has a 3.18 ERA (130 ERA+) so far this season, but the Yankees were pretty good against him (five runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings) back in their last meeting against him in 2019.
Gleyber Torres is returning to the lineup for tonight after getting last night off. Go Yankees, go baseball.
