Friday’s trade deadline is understandably the main topic of conversation around here, but there are still real games to play, and the Yankees begin a three-game series tonight at everyone’s favorite ballpark, Tropicana Field. Jordan Montgomery takes the hill tonight, hoping to build on his solid season that’s seen each month sport a lower ERA than the previous. He’s currently sitting at 3.57 for July, a strong showing at a time when the Yankees have needed, but not rewarded, good starts.
Aaron Judge returns to the lineup after a COVID-IL stint following his positive tests. Kyle Higashioka is also back with the team, and new reliever Clay Holmes is expected to be active tonight. The Rays’ offense has tapered off as the season’s worn on, and indeed since June 1st, the Yankees have been a much better hitting team; however, Tampa’s pitching has significantly outpaced New York’s over that same time span. Regaining a bat like Judge’s can hopefully neutralize some of that tonight.
