At least the lineup is better tonight.
After the latest candidate for “worst loss of the year” in the series opener last night, the Yankees look to get one back against the Red Sox, sending their ace to the mound as he builds on two incredible starts. Of course last Saturday he allowed just a single run to these very same Red Sox over six innings, and a week before than etched his now-near-legendary complete game shutout against the Astros.
After a rough June, Cole’s gotten back on track and finds himself leading AL pitchers in bWAR and third in fWAR, and after a bad night last night, him shutting down the Red Sox would be exactly what this team needs. At the very least, Nick Nelson can’t ruin whatever Cole puts together tonight.
Jonathan Loaisiga returns to the bullpen and Nestor Cortes Jr was also reinstated from the IL, so the pitching is considerably deeper than it was last night. Also unlike last night, the top half of this lineup looks like a real MLB team.
