Ahead of a huge four-game series with the Red Sox, the Yankees are in desperate need of momentum and good mojo. A lot went right in last night’s win over the Phillies, and sweeping this two-game series with a victory today would go a long way toward generating some of that mojo ahead of the trip to Fenway. To pull it off, the Yankees will likely need to see something they’ve never seen before: good pitching from Asher Wojciechowski.
Wojciechowski, 32, looks like the Gerrit Cole you buy from Wish, and has pitched to a 5.95 ERA across 198 big-league innings. He’s seen a marketed uptick in strikeout rate with Triple-A Scranton this season (particularly in his last outing), and though his MiLB ERA is 5.68, those strikeouts have driven a 3.30 FIP that the Yankees are seemingly confident enough can be replicated over three or four innings tonight.
DJ LeMahieu returns to his customary leadoff spot after having last night off with stomach problems. The red-hot Greg Allen remains in the outfield, as does Estevan Florial, who hit his first career homer on Tuesday.
