New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox: Gerrit Cole vs. Nathan Eovaldi

Yankee fans look to a sequel of Cole’s outstanding last start

MLB: New York Yankees at Houston Astros Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

It seems the only way the Yankees can win these days is if their starter throws a complete game shutout. Luckily, the guy going today just threw a complete game shutout last week.

Gerrit Cole takes the ball in game two of this weekend series with the Red Sox, a full week after a 129-pitch, season-defining performance in Houston. Although named to the All Star team, he didn’t participate in the game itself, meaning he’s hopefully well rested and can go as deep as needed today. Given how bad the Yankee bats looked last night, Cole might need to replay last Saturday all over again.

Nathan Eovaldi counters for the Red Sox, having an All Star caliber season himself. He’s actually performing a little worse than he should, with a 3.66 ERA and 3.65 xERA, but a FIP more than a full run lower. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that ERA number regress towards FIP over the summer, but hopefully it holds off for one more day.

There is some stormy weather in the forecast so who knows how that will affect the game.
