It gets late early out there. The Yankees are 6.5 games back of the Red Sox for first place in the AL East, with both the Jays and Rays ahead of them. Further setbacks this season could take them out of the division race, so they’ve gotta start putting wins on the board now, and can do so tonight against a disappointing Twins team.

Jordan Montgomery takes the ball in the midst of an up-and-down year that’s seen some truly great starts and more than a little mediocrity. Two weeks ago he threw seven shutout innings against the White Sox, but in his last start he didn’t even complete five, giving up three runs and notching just a single strikeout against the Blue Jays.

Target Field is one of the truly underrated ballparks in the league, and Minneapolis is one of my favorite cities in the country. Hopefully the Yankees feel the same way this week.
