After two wild games so far, the Yankees and Royals will wrap things up with a afternoon outing in the Bronx. The Yankees narrowly avoided dropping a second straight to the below-.500 Royals, but Gary Sánchez and Luke Voit came to the rescue as they rallied for a win in the ninth. Now today, they have a chance to turn that into a series win today.
To try and get that win, they’ll give the ball to Jameson Taillon. Despite his struggles this season, Taillon is coming off a decent start in his most recent outing. He allowed two runs in 4.2 innings last Friday, before getting pulled to avoid facing the A’s lineup for a third time. His disastrous Phillies’ start excluded, Taillon’s had an ERA under four since May 23rd.
As for the rest of the lineup, Sánchez is back in the three spot tonight after his clutch home run and recently excellent hitting. Gleyber Torres, who has not been doing that of late, is getting the day off. Gio Urshela is still out of the lineup nursing the shin contusion he suffered after getting drilled by a pitch on Tuesday.
On the hill for Kansas City will be righty Brad Keller, who’s had a worse season than Taillon so far. After a good first few years in the big leagues, he’s fallen precipitously in 2021, pitching to a dismal 6.34 ERA and 1.746 WHIP in 15 starts. Keller has coughed up at least five runs in each of his last three starts and opposing hitters have an .876 OPS against him this year, so hopefully, the Yankees tee off as well.
