The Yankees won ugly yesterday, and lost ugly on Friday. Whether it looks good or not, a win today would clinch their fourth series win in the last five, and send them to Tropicana Field on a high note. To do that, they’ll have to beat the Washington Nationals on Sunday, with Domingo Germán getting the ball.
Germán has struggled this year with a 4.32 ERA and 4.80 FIP, and his career on his namesake day isn’t much better. The righthander has won five different Sunday games, but his ERA is an unsightly 4.94. Maybe (probably) that means nothing, but it’s worth mentioning.
Going for the Nationals is righty Joe Ross, who has an near-identical ERA but a lower strikeout rate and much higher walk rate. Germán has pitched better than he should have based on his underlying numbers, but Ross has really overperformed relative to his core metrics. We could be in for a shootout.
Aaron Judge gets the day off today ahead of a big series with the Rays. Judge has been colder than Dippin’ Dots for about a week, hopefully the rest day allows him to refocus,
