It’s a return for Corey Kluber, and a return for Gleyber Torres, as the Yankees look to guarantee at least a series split tonight in Arlington. They’ll play the third game of this four game set with the Rangers, and send the Klubot to the hill.
Although Kluber made his name in Cleveland, he did actually pitch all of a single inning for the Texas Rangers last year, and tonight sees him square off against the team that dealt Emmanuel Clase for him more than a year ago. Kluber has certainly provided more value to the Yankees than he ever did for the Rangers, sporting a 3.48 ERA and 4.01 FIP to date. His walk rate is still the highest it’s been in a real season since his rookie campaign, but adequate strikeout numbers and homer suppression have proven he still has a little left in the tank so far in 2021.
Gleyber Torres is back, hitting fifth in his first game after two consecutive negative COVID-19 tests. The shortstop was heating up before his diagnosis, with a 114 wRC+ in the two weeks before being shut down. Hopefully he’ll pick up right where he left off and add a spark to an inconsistent Yankee offense. Rougned Odor was placed on the paternity list after his baby girl was born last night, so there was already an open roster spot for Torres.
Texas sends Hyeon-Jong Yang to the mound for his second start of the year. After a long tenure in KBO, Yang has thrown 16 innings with the Rangers this season, split between the bullpen and rotation. He features a fastball, slider and changeup as his main offerings, with the change being the most dangerous.
