New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers: Jameson Taillon vs. Spencer Turnbull

Jameson Taillon looks to make it two in a row for the Bombers.

The Yankees will take the field this afternoon riding a high from last night’s offensive explosion, and typically dominant performance from Gerrit Cole. Jameson Taillon will take the mound looking to lead the Yankees to their seventh win in their last ten games.

Taillon looks to rebound from what was a good performance his last time out until the baseball gods of randomness got to him in Cleveland last Sunday. Although he entered the fourth inning cruising, Taillon was met with a dying quail, a single, a ground ball with eyes then a 342’ pitching wedge. Unfortunately, the 342’ chip shot went in the direction of a wall only 339’ away, and it was four runs in about four minutes on Taillon’s ERA. Let’s look for continued improvement from Taillon with his luck evening out today.

The Yankee lineup will aim to continue the power surge it started last night, this time against the right-hander Spencer Turnbull. The 28-year-old will be making his third start of the season for Detroit today. He’s only logged 11 innings so far in 2021 but he’s pitched well, allowing less than one baserunner per inning with a K/BB ratio of better than five to one. The Mississippi native has quietly been a bright spot for Detroit, posting an ERA+ of 107 and a FIP of 3.80 over 216 innings since 2019.

The Yankees will attack Turnbull without Giancarlo Stanton today, as his .429 OBP and .689 SLG over his last 11 games has earned him a day off. Perhaps Aaron Boone is concerned Stanton’s bat might spontaneously combust if it gets any hotter. As a result, Aaron Judge will be in the DH slot today, with Brett Gardner in at left field and Clint Frazier in right.

Since opening the season 6-6, Detroit has lost 13 of their last 15 games. Again, they’ll be looking for something or someone to help them get runners across the plate as they currently rank dead last in the American League in both runs per game and OPS+.
