A baseball season, under normal conditions, takes a long time to unfurl. But if we ignore that for a second and take a snapshot of the standings right now, what we have is a struggling Yankees team taking on the undefeated Orioles. Yes, the Yankees narrowly dropped two of three to Toronto to open the season, and Baltimore mopped the floor with the Red Sox in a three-game sweep.
Fear not, as three good games does not a juggernaut make. The Yankees are still the big favorites here, and they’ll look to grab their first series win against an Orioles team that entered the season with few expectations. New York will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound, with the lefty trying to build on a strong spring. Montgomery gave up just one run in camp, and has a chance this year to solidify himself as one of the team’s most dependable mid-rotation starters.
The Orioles counter with right-hander Jorge López. The 28-year-old has a poor track record at the major league level, most recently spending two season with the Royals while maintaining a 6.42 ERA. He’s made three starts against the Yankees, allowing 13 runs across 13 innings.
