The Yankees struck back against Toronto yesterday, evening their first series of the year at a game apiece. That means that the first series win of the season is on the line today, and it couldn’t hurt to take an early advantage against a division rival.
The Yankees are sending out Domingo Germán for the weekend finale, marking his first regular season appearance since he was placed on administrative leave and subsequently suspended back in 2019. Germán was one of the best performers in spring, winning out the battle for a starting rotation gig and even advancing up the rotation into this opening series. He’ll likely have a limited window to impress in his season debut, as Aaron Boone has been careful not to push the pitch count on his starters so far.
The Blue Jays will counter with T.J. Zeuch, a 25-year-old right-hander with a collective 34 innings of MLB experience earned over the past two seasons. Zeuch isn’t an overpowering pitcher, throwing around 92 mph on his four-seamer, but he mixes in plenty of breaking action — primarily through a healthy dose of cutters and sliders. He does also offer a changeup, though his usage of it dropped significantly after he added the cutter to his arsenal last season. The name of his game is soft contact, and we’ll see if the Yankee lineup can unload on the right pitches.
