Yankees March 2021 Approval Poll: GM Brian Cashman

Do you approve of Brian Cashman’s Opening Day roster construction?

MLB: New York Yankees-Workouts Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Opening Day is finally here, and wouldn’t you know it? It’s also the first day of April. That means it’s time for our monthly approval poll on Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Last time around, Cashman’s approval fell from 61 percent at the end of January to 51 percent just after the start of spring training. That’s a bit more than I would have expected, but in all fairness, February was a quiet month for Yankees news outside of the Justin Wilson, Brett Gardner, and Jay Bruce signings.

In March, Cashman’s club managed to make it through camp in almost entirely one piece, which is really half the challenge. Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, and Clint Frazier all made it into the Opening Day lineup. (Plus the usual healthier cast of characters.)

However, not everyone escaped unscathed. Luke Voit needed knee surgery to repair a partial meniscus tear in his left knee, and Zack Britton had elbow surgery to remove some bone chips. Both will miss at least the first month of the season, and Britton won’t be back until June. New reliever Wilson also endured an IL stint to rest his sore shoulder, though he is expected back before mid-April.

Signing Bruce paid off at least, as he turned out to be a decent depth acquisition and will cover Voit’s vacated position at first for the time being. A low-risk minor league deal in December to sign reliever Lucas Luetge also paid dividends, as he turned heads throughout spring training en route to making the majors for the first time since 2015. Now, the Yankees will see how Luetge and Bruce fare in games that matter.

In a couple other minor moves of note, Deivi García was optioned to the alternate site to make room for the resurgent Domingo Germán in the starting rotation, and both Mike Tauchman and Tyler Wade survived challenges to remain on the Yankees’ Opening Day bench. García is expected to be the Yankees’ “sixth starter” at some point in April, but it will likely be a couple weeks until we see him again.

So as of the end of March, do you approve of Brian Cashman? Has he assembled a winning baseball team for Opening Day and beyond?

As always, there’s a lot to factor into a “yes” or a “no,” and you might feel like your answer is more of a soft “yes” or “no” than a stamp of approval or a sharp rebuke. However, the binary question is the best way to get a direct read on fans’ thoughts.

Vote in the poll below and let us know! We’ll revisit the results in a month.
