Now that the Grapefruit League has begun, there is actually some vaguely real Yankees baseball to watch! Fully aware of the goofiness of the extremely small number of games, we talk about what we’ve liked so far from Gary Sánchez and Jameson Taillon, why Tom was correct on Gerrit Cole working with Sánchez, Clarke Schmidt’s elbow strain, and hit-by-pitch maverick Derek Dietrich popping up as a non-roster invitee.
Brett Gardner also re-signed in the time since the last recording, so we discussed him and later shared frustrations about non-televised spring training games in the year 2021. (Someone just set up a camera on a tripod!) The news of Aaron Boone’s heart scare broke in the middle of this episode, so he is briefly mentioned as well. Our thoughts are with him as he recovers.
Note: This episode was recorded before Corey Kluber’s start on Wednesday; otherwise, he probably would’ve shared Yankee of the Week honors with Taillon.
