One of the big storylines of the Yankees’ spring training had been the battle for the fifth rotation spot. Now less than a week out from the start of the regular season, it appears we have our answer.
Ahead of Friday night’s spring training matchup against the Orioles, the Yankees announced they they had optioned Deivi García to Triple-A, meaning Domingo Germán will likely be headed north with the team to start the 2021 season.
García had been fairly decent throughout spring training, but struggled in his final outing, allowing four runs on seven hits Wednesday against the Blue Jays. As for Germán, he’s thrown nine shutout innings this spring, allowing only five hits, while also putting up 13 strikeouts and just one walk. The strength of those performances seemingly has tilted the “battle” for the rotation in his favor.
This means García will start the season at the alternate site/Triple-A, but in all likelihood, he’ll see the majors at some point this season.
