I’m not going to break down the tiebreaker scenarios or anything like that. For the third day in a row, the Yankees have a clear and direct path to the postseason: win this baseball game, and you’re guaranteed to be in the Wild Card Game on Tuesday. They will ask Jameson Taillon to help do just that as the righty makes his second start off his ankle tendon related IL stint.
Taillon’s one of those fun pitchers with a 4.40 ERA and 4.46 FIP, meaning that he probably is exactly who we think he is: a moderately-talented middle rotation arm with a little upside, but not necessarily the guy you want to go in a must-win game. This isn’t quite a must-win game — that would come tomorrow or Tuesday — but it’s close enough that Aaron Boone will need to be aggressive with his bullpen should Taillon hit any speedbumps.
DJ LeMahieu is out, on the IL with his sports hernia, meaning we’re likely to see Gleyber Torres continue to be the leadoff hitter for as long as the Yankee season goes. He’s slotted into the top spot again today.
