There’s a running joke in the HBO series Barry where the title character, a hitman attempting to go legit, swears off his life of crime by dedicating himself to a new job, passion or relationship “starting.......now”.
The Yankees are in a bad place, but they’re still in the playoff hunt, and with lots of games remaining against these very same Toronto Blue Jays, they control their own destiny. If they want to go deep into October, they’ve gotta win some games, starting.......now.
To do that, Deivi García is going to have to continue his impressive start to his MLB career. He’s struck out more batters and walked fewer than he did at Triple-A last year, and although he’s only made two major league starts, a 3.38 ERA and 2.97 FIP will play in any rotation. The Yankees need a big start tonight and García can deliver.
Of course, as we saw last night, just getting a good start isn’t always enough. The Yankees need to jump all over Tanner Roark, who has a career low K-BB%, career high 5.74 ERA, and a 6.32 FIP that indicates he’s actually pitching better than he should. He gets egregiously bad the second time through the order, so the Yankees should make him work early, and drive the baseball late.
Gary Sánchez is back at catcher.
