The Yankees took care of business to open this series, sweeping yesterday’s doubleheader by a combined 15 runs. They’ll look to carry that performance over to today’s matinee, where they have a chance to pull away from the Orioles — something that no-one expected to say about the Yankees in September.

Jordan Montgomery gets the ball for New York, and he’s in need of a bounce-back start badly. His two starts in September have not been pretty — he’s managed to pitch just four innings total. His appearance against Tampa Bay was the uglier of the two, as he couldn’t escape the first inning, but his last outing against Toronto wasn’t a confidence booster either. The Yankees need to start getting some length out of Montgomery if he’s going to be a starter in the postseason, and he needs to get it going starting today against Baltimore.

Meanwhile, the Orioles counter with Dean Kremer. Kremer made his MLB debut last week against the Yankees, and he kept the Bombers’ lineup from doing any sort of damage. He went six strong in that outing, allowing just one run on a hit and three walks while striking out seven. The Yankees solved Keegan Akin yesterday, and now they’ll have to figure out how to get to Kremer to win this game.
