New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays: Mike King vs. Ryan Thompson

Let’s play two!

MLB: New York Yankees at Washington Nationals Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Game one of the doubleheader between the Yankees and Rays was so much fun, I think they ought to do it again.

The second half will look a little different, because instead of turning to workhorse starters, both teams will deploy bullpen games. The Yankees plan to use Mike King as an opener, his which marks his first start in the major leagues. King, 25, has appeared in two games in 2020, allowing six earned runs in seven innings. The right-hander relies mostly on a sinker, but his curveball has a 38.5% whiff rate. Watch for that as his out pitch.

The Rays, meanwhile, summon Ryan Thompson as their opener. The rookie right-hander has made four appearances out of the bullpen, allowing one earned run across six innings of work. Like King, he too is a sinker-curve guy.

The Yankees add Aaron Hicks and Luke Voit to their lineup, while Erik Kratz handles catching duty. Remember, Kratz is the Yankees’ all-time batting leader, and third in team history for OPS.* That’s quite the backup.

And here’s the Ray’s lineup:
