The trade deadline has come and went, and the Yankees held fast, betting they can finish the season strong with the pieces they already have on the roster. We’ll get our first look at that bet tonight, as the Yankees start a crucial three game series with the Rays at Yankee Stadium.
Tonight is yet another round in the long drama of Gerrit Cole and Tyler Glasnow, two former Pirates who have blossomed into two of the best pitchers in baseball since leaving Pittsburgh. Both pitchers haven’t quite lived up to their billing so far in 2020, with Glasnow sporting gaudy strikeout numbers while walking a lot of batters and running into home run trouble.
Cole, of course, has had his own problems with the long ball, being tied with Chris Paddack for the most home runs allowed this season. His strikeout numbers are good, but not outstanding, and a persistent problem with fastball command has kept him from really being the Cy Young contender we’ve seen over the past two seasons.
