The Yankees will play one final intrasquad game tonight before heading to the exhibition section of their summer camp slate. For the Yankees, Gerrit Cole will get a last tuneup, while Nick Tropeano will start for the Bombers.
Cole has looked ready for the season during his intrasquad starts. In his most recent outing, he dominated his Yankee teammates, striking out nine across 5.2 innings and running his pitch count up to 84. It seems likely he’ll approach 100 pitches today, in anticipation of his scheduled Opening Day start next Thursday night.
Tropeano signed a minor-league contract with the team in January. The 29-year-old struggled through injuries and ineffectiveness last season, ultimately throwing just 13.2 innings for the Angels. He maintained a 4.74 ERA in 76 innings in 2018, striking out 64 and walking 31.
