Another day, another intrasquad Yankees game. After last night’s scrimmage was thrown off by rain, the Yankees will take to the field again on this warm summer afternoon.
Today’s game will feature Gerrit Cole and Michael King, reprising the starting matchup from the team’s second intrasquad session last week. Cole looked very sharp in his initial summer tuneup, easing through five innings against his Yankee teammates. He eclipsed 60 unofficial pitches his first time out, so we’ll how the Yankees will let Cole go with just a week and a half to go before the season is set to restart.
King, who was also effective in his first appearance of camp, will continue to argue his case to make the team’s rotation. With Masahiro Tanaka’s status still up in the air as he recovers from getting hit in the head by a terrifying line drive, King has as much a chance as any to earn some work at the major-league level.
