The abridged 2020 MLB Draft is open, and we have the Yankees’ first pick. With the 28th overall pick, New York chose catcher Austin Wells out of Arizona. Wells slashed .375/.527/.589 with a pair of home runs in 74 at-bats this year.
Wells is a bit of a surprise pick considering that the Yankees were tied to a bunch of pitchers, some of whom were available when their turn to pick came, but Wells fits the team’s emphasis on power-driven bats. While he’s listed as a catcher, there are some concerns about whether he’ll stick at the position or move towards a corner outfield spot. Regardless, if the bat plays up to his potential the Yankees can find a way to fit him in.
Be sure to read our full write up on Wells here, and check out some live footage of Wells’ swing in Cape Cod action from last year (sporting a now-ironic Sox uniform):
Finally, we want you to give us a grade on the new Yankees first-round pick. What do you think of the pick? Did they land the right guy, or do you wish that they went a different direction? Vote in the poll below, and let us know what you think in the comment section.
