Yankees place three prospects on Keith Law’s top 100 list

You’ll find three familiar names on Law’s list.

Last year, Keith Law’s top 100 list featured only one player from the Yankees. Law ranked Deivi Garcia as the 61st best prospect in the game. While Garcia slipped in the standings in the 2020 version of Law’s list, he is joined by two other Bombers this year: Clarke Schmidt and Jasson Dominguez.

Schmidt, 24, places the highest among the Yankees at number 51. He has made every top prospect list this winter, save for Baseball Prospectus’. The right-hander had a strong bounce-back season in 2019, finishing the year with three strong outings for Double-A Trenton. Since returning from Tommy John surgery, he reestablished his high, pre-draft upside.

“His delivery is better now than it was pre-Tommy John surgery, staying more closed with a shorter arm path, so while there’s still effort, he looks like a starter now,” Law explains. “If he can build up to that workload, he has a fourth starter floor and a ceiling of a good No. 3.”

Garcia, meanwhile, saw his stock fall six spots to number 67. Oddly enough, this comes after an ascendant season, one that saw him pitch his way from High-A Tampa all the way to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Law didn’t have any specific knocks against Garcia; he likes the right-hander’s stuff. He just has questions about the 20-year-old’s delivery. While he still expects Garcia to start, he is intrigued by the possibility of turning the righty into a dangerous reliever.

Dominguez wraps up the list, ranking 99th. While other rankings have The Martian higher, Law speaks highly of the 16-year-old, describing him as “...the most talented player to come out of Latin America since at least Wander Franco.” He raves about Dominguez’s tools, noting that the only thing he has to develop is in-game skills like plate discipline. Get excited about him, folks.

Unlike last year, the prospect lists in 2020 seem to all agree. Schmidt, Garcia, and Dominguez rank among the game’s best young talent. The Yankees’ farm system takes a step forward, with impact pitchers knocking on the door, and a potential superstar worth dreaming on.
