SNY | Jim Duquette: While DJ LeMahieu remains the Yankees’ primary target in the offseason, it’s always good to monitor the market of other potential objectives, especially pitchers. Former MLB general manager and current SNY analyst Jim Duquette spoke to Trevor Bauer’s agent and reported, among other things, that the reigning NL Cy Young will not sign a one-year deal.
Earlier in his career Bauer had mentioned that one-year deals would be something he’d consider in free agency, but it seems the security of a multi-year deal is too much to pass up. Duquette added that the Mets, Angels and Blue Jays are three teams most involved right now, with the Yankees currently on the outside window shopping.
NY Post | Dan Martin: Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames spoke to the New York Post about Gary Sánchez’s struggles in 2020. He said the two of them, in addition to assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere, watched some video last month and detected what went wrong with the former All-Star catcher, who had a 69 wRC+ and a 36 percent strikeout rate in 2020. Thames continued, saying that Sánchez wasn’t staying behind the ball enough and was having a difficult time recognizing pitches, but now they’ve made adjustments that they hope will get him back on track. Sánchez is currently playing in the Dominican Republic with Toros del Este.
MLB.com | Will Leitch: In a fun Christmas exercise, MLB.com released a list with one holiday wish from all 30 teams. As you probably expected, the Yankees’ one had to do with re-signing DJ LeMahieu. “This isn’t complicated: He might be the best and most important lineup piece they have, and their margin for error if they lose him is thinner than you might think,” Leitch wrote about the Bombers and the reigning batting champion.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette | Jason Mackey: The Washington Nationals acquired first baseman Josh Bell from the Pittsburgh Pirates for right-handed pitchers Wil Crowe and Eddy Yean. Bell, who has struggled after a brilliant first half in 2019, was previously connected to the Yankees at one point in the winter.
