In the blink of an eye, the Yankees have gone from cruising to crisis mode. The memory of their big Game One victory now feels distant, as the Yankees have lost Games Two and Three to put themselves in a must-win situation.
Win tonight, though, and they’re back in it, with Gerrit Cole presumably ready to go on short rest tomorrow. It’s a tough spot, to be sure, but the Yankees aren’t dead. They weren’t dead when they floundered through a midseason 5-15 stretch, and they weren’t dead when they scuffled through a shaky final week. They bounced back from their appalling August with a 10-game winning streak, and they rebounded from their poor regular season finish with three impressive victories to open the postseason. They’re just as capable of putting these two bad games behind them to win two more.
The Rays certainly won’t roll over, though. This whole series has been a slugfest, and I suspect we could be in for one more tonight.
