This Day in Yankees History (October 13)

The Yankees advance to the World Series for a record 35th time after beating the Cleveland Indians, 9-5, to win the ALCS in six games. They would go on to sweep the San Diego Padres in the Fall Classic to cement themselves as one of the greatest teams in MLB history.

Mariano Rivera extends his consecutive postseason scoreless frames streak to 33.1 innings, breaking the 38 year-old record of Whitey Ford. The Yankees’ Hall of Fame lefty had established the record from 1960 to 1962 with 33 innings as a World Series starter.

Derek Jeter, making what would become one of the most memorable plays of his career, backs up an errant relay throw down the first baseline and flipped it home to nail Jeremy Giambi at the plate as the potential tying run. It’s now famously known as “The Flip Play.”

Birthdays

Happy birthday to Ben Paschal and Charlie Silvera!

Paschal played six of his eight years with the Yankees. He was part of the Murders’ Row team and is best known for hitting .360 during the 1925 season while replacing Babe Ruth, who missed 40 games with a stomach ailment.

Silvera was with the Yankees from 1948-1956, winning six championships in pinstripes, despite appearing in only one of those. He primarily served as the backup catcher to Yogi Berra. Silvera returned to the Yankees as a player/manager for their Southern Association Double-A affiliate in 1958.
