For the first half of this game, it looked like the Yankees might pull off a 1-0 victory over the Rays. Instead, Tampa Bay tied it up and pushed it to extra innings. The Yankee bullpen deserves a lot of credit for stringing together six scoreless innings, but it wasn’t meant to be today. The Rays walked off in the 12th. We’ll have a full recap up shortly. Here are the highlights:
Winner of the Game
CC Sabathia made his first regular season appearance out of the bullpen tonight, and he did a good job. The Yankees only let him go one inning, but it was a scoreless one, and he struck out two batters.
Honorable Mention: Cameron Maybin, Chad Green
Loser(s) of the Game
You know, Stephen Tarpley has not been good in the majors this year. Through 22 innings, he owned a 7.36 ERA (5.67 FIP) with 6.14 BB/9 and 2.05 HR/9 entering tonight’s game. Then he gave up a solo shot to Kevin Kiermaier to tie up the game. Something will have gone very wrong indeed if he ends up on the postseason roster.
The bullpen shut the Rays down for six innings after that, but they started to run out of decent arms and opted not to use Aroldis Chapman. Cory Gearrin entered in the bottom of the 12th and immediately surrendered a walk-off bomb to Ji-Man Choi.
Honorable mention: Diego Castillo for drilling Gio Urshela in the hand.
